Using Your Body and Mind to Reach Your Ideal Weight
The way people view one another is a very complex process when you look at it from the outside.
I am sure that you are familiar with the saying “first impressions are everything.” What exactly does that mean? Have you ever noticed how much information you attach to someone simply by just looking at them? The person doesn’t even have to open their mouth before you have made several unconscious and conscious judgements about them.
It is this view that other people have of you that is always at the front of your mind; so when it comes to losing weight an important question to ask is: ‘Who do you really want to loose weight for?’
Which people come into your mind when you imagine being at your ideal weight. It is surprising how often the idea of losing weight comes into our mind because you want to look good for someone or a particular group of people. It is their approval that most people seek to gain when they decide to make a change in their life.
When you decide to make a change in your life, no matter how small it is, it is a very important stage. Knowing the reason why you want to make that change is the difference between whether or not you are actually going to do the things necessary to reach that goal.
So who is it that you want to impress by losing weight and reaching your ideal weight? Of course that person is you! I asked that question with a bit of tongue in cheek. Ultimately it is you who would benefit the most if you are successful in losing weight.
Knowing how much weight you want to loose is a good start. Being able to see with your mind’s eye how you would look like makes your goal feel more obtainable. Your brain is great at remembering things in the form of pictures. In fact it is well known that simply by imagining how you would like to perform at a given task is equally as important as practicing that task repeatedly.
By building up a mental image of how you would like to look, and how you would feel, you are giving your mind a sneak preview of how you would be once you have achieved your ideal weight. Mentally and physically. How dose it feel having that feeling flow though your body? What would you be doing differently at that stage when you reach your ideal weight?
Now that you know that it is ultimately for you that you want to reach your ideal weight for, it is personal. You have imagined what it would be like and you have felt what it would feel like to be at you ideal weight.
Loosing weight is a personal issue, sometimes though you may get emotional about it as the things you do to try and loose that unwanted weight don’t work. Or you loose weight for a while only to see it come back on twice as fast with a few extra friends.
Attaching negative emotions to your ambitions only makes it harder for you to get into the right frame of mind for doing something worth while for yourself.
I’m not going to lie to you and say that it doesn’t matter what you weigh. You know from your own personal experience that once you go over your ideal weight, you have to adjust accordingly and often find that you have to stop doing some of the things that you once enjoyed doing. How would it make you feel to give up the things that you enjoy doing right now? I know that it would make me feel even more terrible than when my only issue was being overweight. Now I can’t do the things that I enjoy doing.
So being at your personal ideal weight is so much more than what you see on the scales. It is much more than what other people think about you. It’s about how you feel about yourself and more importantly about how you would like to feel about yourself and live your life.
It’s about aspiring to a certain lifestyle that would make you feel stronger and more sure of yourself than you do right now. Living your life the way you want to and making your own decisions based on your own beliefs and values defines who you are as a person.
It is that image you have of yourself that forms the foundations to whether or not you will succeed in getting to the weight that you want. Having a positive mental image of yourself and knowing that what you are doing is within your abilities, creates the confidence that you need not only to see through your plans for change, but to help you get through the moments when things don’t go according to plan. By remembering the image of yourself at the end, having lost all that weight and doing the things that you enjoy doing, helps you to stay focused when met with those challenging foods that you are trying to replace.
If you usually focus on all the things that you have to restrict yourself on and on how difficult that would be. It is no surprise that you will find yourself craving for these foods and binging on them when you start losing those pounds and getting into shape. This is the definition of the so called yo- yo diet. You realise that you are over weight; you start to make the necessary changes to shift that weight. You see the weight drop off, you thank god that it’s all going and reward yourself with a pizza; then a coke… with a bit of cake to round things off. Before you know it you are right back where you started.
Thinking about the type of lifestyle that you want to be living and all the things that you want to be doing, makes losing weight a part of your daily life. So instead of creating a diet where you are literally dying to eat all your favourite junk foods, you begin to design a healthier lifestyle for yourself.
Designing a better lifestyle for yourself is more exciting than designing a diet and counting calories. It’s true that you may have to cut down on certain things, but if you are creative you can always find a tastier alternative. Exercising doesn’t have to be a chore, instead it could be something you enjoy doing as part of your training for a stronger, more flexible healthy body and mind.
You will be pleasantly surprised how creating a more exciting lifestyle for yourself can not only help you shed weight, but also gets your whole mind feeling healthier and more energetic.
